How to say "can you say it again?" in Thai (with phonetics)
พูดอีกทีได้ไหม
phûut ìik thii dâi mǎi
Can you say it again?
When you are when you did not catch something, this is the everyday way to say "can you say it again?" in Thai.
Tips
- To be polite, add a particle at the end. A man says ครับ khráp: พูดอีกทีได้ไหมครับ. A woman says คะ khá in questions: พูดอีกทีได้ไหมคะ. (ค่ะ khâ is for statements, but คะ khá is for questions.) For extra politeness, start with ช่วย chûai (please help): ช่วยพูดอีกทีได้ไหมครับ/คะ.
- Tone tip: dâi is falling and mǎi is rising. Keep them different, with dâi dropping and mǎi lifting at the end like a question. Also note that ìik is low and thii is flat.
- A quick shorter version is พูดอีกทีนะครับ/คะ (phûut ìik thii ná khráp/khá), which means 'say it once more, please'. You can also say ขอโทษครับ/ค่ะ ไม่ได้ยิน (khɔ̌ɔ-thôot, mâi dâi yin), meaning 'sorry, I didn't hear'.
Word by word
- พูด phûut: to say, to speak (Falling tone, and the vowel is long.)
- อีก ìik: again, more (Low tone.)
- ที thii: time, occasion (one more time) (Mid tone. อีกที means 'one more time'. อีกครั้ง ìik khráng is a slightly more formal alternative.)
- ได้ dâi: can, be able to (Falling tone.)
- ไหม mǎi: question particle (yes/no question) (Rising tone. It turns the sentence into a question.)
