How to say "no plastic bag, thanks" in Thai (with phonetics)
ไม่เอาถุง ขอบคุณ
mâi ao thǔng khɔ̀ɔp-khun
No bag, thank you.
When you are paying at 7-Eleven, this is the everyday way to say "no plastic bag, thanks" in Thai.
Tips
- Polite ending: a man adds ครับ khráp, a woman adds ค่ะ khâ. For example ไม่เอาถุงครับ ขอบคุณครับ (man), ไม่เอาถุงค่ะ ขอบคุณค่ะ (woman).
- Tone tip: mâi (falling) ao (mid) thǔng (rising) goes down, flat, then up. Say thǔng with a rising tone, like a questioning "thung?", and don't make it flat.
- The cashier may ask first: รับถุงไหม ráp thǔng măi (want a bag?). You can answer just ไม่เอา mâi ao, plus your khráp or khâ.
Word by word
- ไม่เอา mâi ao: don't want / no thanks (mâi is falling tone; ao is mid tone)
- ถุง thǔng: bag (Thai people just say ถุง; ถุงพลาสติก (thǔng phláa-sa-dtik) is not needed at the till.)
- ขอบคุณ khɔ̀ɔp-khun: thank you (Add the polite particle at the end (see notes).)
Say it your own way
Type it half in English, half in Thai, spelled any way you like: Thinglish works out what you meant and gives you the Thai with tones and a native voice.
