How to say "I live here" in Thai (with phonetics)
อยู่ที่นี่
yùu thîi-nîi
I live here.
When you are when someone asks if you are a tourist, this is the everyday way to say "I live here" in Thai.
Tips
- Add the polite ending: a man says อยู่ที่นี่ครับ (yùu thîi-nîi khráp), a woman says อยู่ที่นี่ค่ะ (yùu thîi-nîi khâ). Only the ending differs.
- Tones: yùu is low and flat, then thîi-nîi is two falling tones in a row. Let your voice drop sharply on each of them, like a short firm "hey!".
- To say "No, I live here", start with ไม่ใช่ (mâi-châi, no/not so): ไม่ใช่ อยู่ที่นี่ + khráp/khâ.
Word by word
- อยู่ yùu: to live, to stay, to be located (Low tone, long vowel. Thai usually drops "I" when it is obvious.)
- ที่นี่ thîi-nîi: here (Both syllables have a falling tone.)
Say it your own way
Type it half in English, half in Thai, spelled any way you like: Thinglish works out what you meant and gives you the Thai with tones and a native voice.
