How to say "I want this one" in Thai (with phonetics)
เอาอันนี้
ao an-níi
I'll take this one. / I want this one.
When you are pointing at something in a shop, this is the everyday way to say "I want this one" in Thai.
Tips
- To be polite, add a particle at the end. A man says เอาอันนี้ครับ (ao an-níi khráp) and a woman says เอาอันนี้ค่ะ (ao an-níi khâ). The rest of the sentence is the same.
- Tone tip: ao and an are both mid tone (flat, no accent), and only níi is high. Keep the first two flat and lift your voice on níi. Don't say นี่ nîi (falling), which means 'this is / here'.
- If the thing is not small, swap อัน for another classifier. For example, a shirt is ตัว (tua): เอาตัวนี้ (ao tua níi).
Word by word
- เอา ao: to take, to want (to buy or choose) (The usual shop word for choosing something. It sounds more natural than อยากได้ here.)
- อัน an: item (classifier for small things) (Classifier. Here it stands for 'one' of the things you are pointing at.)
- นี้ níi: this (High tone. It comes after the noun or classifier: อันนี้ 'this one'.)
Say it your own way
Type it half in English, half in Thai, spelled any way you like: Thinglish works out what you meant and gives you the Thai with tones and a native voice.
