How to say "not spicy, please" in Thai (with phonetics)
ไม่เผ็ดนะ
mâi phèt ná
Not spicy, please.
When you are ordering food at a street stall, this is the everyday way to say "not spicy, please" in Thai.
Tips
- Add the polite ending: a man says ไม่เผ็ดนะครับ mâi phèt ná khráp, a woman says ไม่เผ็ดนะคะ mâi phèt ná khá. In a question the woman's particle is คะ khá, high tone. In a statement it is ค่ะ khâ, falling tone.
- Tone tip: mâi is falling, phèt is low and short, ná is high. The pitch goes down, low, then up: ไม่ (↘) เผ็ด (↓) นะ (↗). Say the final particle lightly.
- You can also say ไม่เอาเผ็ด mâi ao phèt (I don't want it spicy), or ไม่ใส่พริก mâi sài phrík (don't put chilli in). All of them work at a stall.
Word by word
- ไม่ mâi: not (Falling tone. Don't mix it up with ใหม่ mài (new) or ไหม mǎi (question word).)
- เผ็ด phèt: spicy (Low tone. It is a short syllable ending in a stop 't', so say it short and sharp.)
- นะ ná: softening particle: 'okay?', 'please' (High tone. It makes the request soft and friendly, like 'please' or 'okay?'.)
Say it your own way
