How to say "turn right" in Thai (with phonetics)
เลี้ยวขวา
líiao khwǎa
Turn right.
When you are giving directions to a taxi or motorbike taxi, this is the everyday way to say "turn right" in Thai.
Tips
- Politeness: a man adds ครับ, เลี้ยวขวาครับ líiao khwǎa khráp. A woman adds ค่ะ, เลี้ยวขวาค่ะ líiao khwǎa khâ. For a softer 'please', add หน่อย nɔ̀i before it: เลี้ยวขวาหน่อยครับ/ค่ะ.
- Tone tip: líiao is high (pitch up), khwǎa is rising (dips, then goes up). Don't flatten khwǎa, or it may sound like a different word.
- Useful partner phrase: เลี้ยวซ้าย líiao sáai (turn left). Add ตรงนี้ trong níi (right here) to say where: เลี้ยวขวาตรงนี้.
Word by word
- เลี้ยว líiao: to turn (High tone.)
- ขวา khwǎa: right (direction) (Rising tone. Say khw together, like 'kw' with a breathy k.)
Say it your own way
Type it half in English, half in Thai, spelled any way you like: Thinglish works out what you meant and gives you the Thai with tones and a native voice.
