How to say "stop here, please" in Thai (with phonetics)
จอดตรงนี้หน่อย
jɔ̀ɔt trong-níi nɔ̀ɔi
Stop here, please.
When you are in a taxi, this is the everyday way to say "stop here, please" in Thai.
Tips
- Add the polite particle at the end. A man says ครับ khráp (high tone) and a woman says ค่ะ khâ (falling tone): จอดตรงนี้หน่อยครับ / จอดตรงนี้หน่อยค่ะ.
- Tone tip: only níi is high. jɔ̀ɔt and nɔ̀ɔi are low, so the pitch goes low, mid, high, low. Don't raise jɔ̀ɔt or nɔ̀ɔi.
- To ask rather than tell, say จอดตรงนี้ได้ไหม jɔ̀ɔt trong-níi dâai-mǎi (can you stop here?). You can also say จอดหน้าปั๊มหน่อย jɔ̀ɔt nâa pám nɔ̀ɔi (stop in front of the petrol station) to name a landmark.
Word by word
- จอด jɔ̀ɔt: to stop, to park (a vehicle) (Low tone. Use this for stopping a car, not หยุด, which is for stopping yourself or an action.)
- ตรงนี้ trong-níi: right here, at this spot (ตรง means 'at the spot'. นี้ is 'this' and has a high tone.)
- หน่อย nɔ̀ɔi: a bit, please (softener) (This is what makes it a polite request. Thai has no direct word for 'please' here.)
Say it your own way
Type it half in English, half in Thai, spelled any way you like: Thinglish works out what you meant and gives you the Thai with tones and a native voice.
