How to say "where is the toilet?" in Thai (with phonetics)
ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหน
hɔ̂ng-nám yùu thîi-nǎi
Where is the toilet?
When you are in a restaurant, this is the everyday way to say "where is the toilet?" in Thai.
Tips
- To make it polite, add a particle at the end. A man says ครับ (khráp): ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหนครับ. A woman says คะ (khá) for questions: ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหนคะ. Women use ค่ะ (khâ) only for statements, not questions.
- Tone tip: ที่ไหน is falling then rising (thîi-nǎi), and the rising tone on ไหน is what makes it sound like a question. Keep อยู่ low and flat (yùu) and don't let it rise.
- Word order: the thing you ask about comes first, then อยู่ then ที่ไหน. Thai doesn't need 'is' or 'the'.
Word by word
- ห้องน้ำ hɔ̂ng-nám: toilet, restroom (literally 'water room') (The everyday word in restaurants. Falling tone, then high tone.)
- อยู่ yùu: to be located at (Low tone, long vowel. Used for where things are.)
- ที่ไหน thîi-nǎi: where (Question word that goes at the end of the sentence. Falling tone, then rising tone.)
Say it your own way
