How to say "how much is it?" in Thai (with phonetics)
อันนี้เท่าไหร่
an-níi thâo-rài
How much is this one?
When you are at a market stall, this is the everyday way to say "how much is it?" in Thai.
Tips
- To make it polite, add a particle. A man says อันนี้เท่าไหร่ครับ an-níi thâo-rài khráp. A woman says อันนี้เท่าไหร่คะ an-níi thâo-rài khá (in questions she uses คะ khá, high tone, not ค่ะ khâ, which she uses in statements).
- Tone tip: thâo is falling and rài is low, so the question does not rise at the end like English. The word เท่าไหร่ already makes it a question. Do not mix up rài (low) with rǎi (rising).
- To point at something farther away, say อันนั้น an-nán (that one) instead of อันนี้ an-níi (this one).
Word by word
- อันนี้ an-níi: this one (for pointing at an item) (อัน an is a general classifier for things; point at the item as you say it.)
- เท่าไหร่ thâo-rài: how much (Often shortened to just เท่าไหร่ if you are already pointing.)
Say it your own way
Type it half in English, half in Thai, spelled any way you like: Thinglish works out what you meant and gives you the Thai with tones and a native voice.
