How to say "it's too expensive" in Thai (with phonetics)
แพงไป
phɛɛng pai
It's too expensive.
When you are bargaining at a market, this is the everyday way to say "it's too expensive" in Thai.
Tips
- Add the polite ending: a man says แพงไปครับ phɛɛng pai khráp, a woman says แพงไปค่ะ phɛɛng pai khâ. For a question, a woman uses คะ khá, as in ลดหน่อยได้ไหมคะ.
- Tone tip: แพง and ไป are both mid tone, so say them flat and even. Don't let the voice rise at the end. The only tone comes on the ending: khráp is high, khâ is falling.
- To bargain, follow up with ลดหน่อยได้ไหม lót nɔ̀i dâai mǎi, "can you lower it a bit?" Add ครับ or ค่ะ to the end.
Word by word
- แพง phɛɛng: expensive (Mid tone, so keep your voice flat.)
- ไป pai: too (much) (Literally "go". After an adjective it means "too". Mid tone.)
Say it your own way
Type it half in English, half in Thai, spelled any way you like: Thinglish works out what you meant and gives you the Thai with tones and a native voice.
