How to say "thank you" in Thai (with phonetics)
ขอบคุณ
khòop-khun
Thank you
When you are after a shop assistant helps you, this is the everyday way to say "thank you" in Thai.
Tips
- To make it polite, a man ends it with ครับ: ขอบคุณครับ khòop-khun khráp. A woman ends it with ค่ะ: ขอบคุณค่ะ khòop-khun khâ.
- Tone tip: say khòop in a low, flat voice, without rising. Then say khun at a normal mid pitch. Don't say 'khóop-khún' with both syllables high.
- For extra warmth, say ขอบคุณมาก khòop-khun mâak (thank you very much), then add khráp or khâ.
Word by word
- ขอบคุณ khòop-khun: thank you (First syllable low tone, second syllable mid tone. Add khráp or khâ after it to be polite.)
Say it your own way
Type it half in English, half in Thai, spelled any way you like: Thinglish works out what you meant and gives you the Thai with tones and a native voice.
