How to say "I am learning Thai" in Thai (with phonetics)
กำลังเรียนภาษาไทยอยู่
gam-lang riian phaa-sǎa thai yùu
I'm (still) learning Thai.
When you are when someone compliments your Thai, this is the everyday way to say "I am learning Thai" in Thai.
Tips
- Politeness: add ครับ khráp at the end if you are a man, or ค่ะ khâ if you are a woman: กำลังเรียนภาษาไทยอยู่ครับ / ค่ะ. Everything else stays the same. Starting with ขอบคุณครับ/ค่ะ (khɔ̀ɔp-khun, 'thank you') is also very natural.
- Tones: ภาษา is phaa-sǎa, with the second syllable rising. ไทย thai is mid and flat, so don't let it rise like a question. อยู่ yùu is low and short in pitch. The particles differ too: khráp is high and khâ is falling.
- A shorter, more modest version is ยังเรียนอยู่ (yang riian yùu, 'still studying'). Thai people often say it after a compliment.
Word by word
- กำลัง gam-lang: in the middle of doing (progressive marker) (Goes before the verb. Together with อยู่ at the end it means 'am in the process of'.)
- เรียน riian: to study, to learn
- ภาษาไทย phaa-sǎa thai: Thai language (ภาษา 'language' + ไทย 'Thai'. Thai people usually drop 'I' here, so no ผม or ฉัน is needed.)
- อยู่ yùu: (ongoing action marker; literally 'to be/stay') (Added at the end to show the action is still going on.)
